Great Music

  • Blitzen Trapper -

    Blitzen Trapper: Furr
By far one of the best records released in 2008. This record by Portland's experimental folk group "Blitzen Trapper" is among the greatest I've heard in a while. All songs are crafted with the utmost care and with a visionary creativity. Check this band out for sure!

  • Placebo -

    Placebo: Battle For The Sun
An incredible new album from one of Britain's greatest bands. A unique and powerful voice leads this power-trio's unique sound.

  • M. Ward -

    M. Ward: Hold Time
    M. Ward's latest offering serves up a new batch of amazing material. A modern-day troubadour, Ward writes introspective and poignant music reflective of the society we live in.

  • Gandharvas -

Gandharvas: A Soap Bubble And Inertia
This debut record from one of London's best bands ever is an incredible piece of creative genius. Inspired songs reminiscent of Blind Melon crossed with Jane's Addiction in their indie prime.

  • Buddy Guy -

    Buddy Guy: Sweet Tea
A great record from a great artist. This is a good place to start if you're into Buddy's sound. Considered by many to be Buddy's best work.

  • Asian Dub Foundation -

    Asian Dub Foundation: Rafi's Revenge
This classic record by English dub band Asian Dub Foundation is one for the collection, if you can find it. This record is innovative, different and very interesting. Check it out!

  • Alice in Chains -

Alice in Chains: Black Gives Way To Blue
Alice in Chains, a band that is a necessary mention in terms of 90s musical canon, returns with a new album. Layne Staley's signature vocal is replaced by William DuVall, a voice that is respectful of the past of the band but also interested in carving a new future for them. This new record released September 29th is definitely worth a look.

Pat

I thought the beginning was very dynamic, and the tones from the horns and trombone were much cleaner then our introduction. The balance of the entire piece is fantastic-you can hear the flutes as well as the tuba. The "Pulsating" part seemed to put a emphasis on 1 and 3, more so then our band does. The big moments aren't as loud as i expected, and they come right down dynamicaly after its passed. The ending was pretty subdued as well.

Allison

-good balance between horns and moving line in tenor saxophones at the beginning
-we could use more clarinet at the beginning
-trumpet entry is not as loud in recording, this could work for us, wouldn't be as abrupt
-moving line (halfway through...about 8 bars before the "big moment") could maybe start out quieter, and have a more gradual crescendo
-there are a couple sections where background figures are obvious and they haven't been when we played it
-"big moment" needs to have very accented, tongued notes to emulate the effect created in the recording

Jana

very warm beginning especially in the horn section, instruments where in in tune and sounded as one voice. Good articulation

Carrington

- nothing is overpowered
- can hear lots of flute and clarinet
- lots of dynamics
- band was together the whole time
- not as much French Horn (not as overwhelming)
- all instruments are balanced
- good phrasing

Bryn

- very legato and flowing connected notes
- again, like all these professional bands, only sounds like its singular players rather than multiple
- good dynamic control and crescendos and tone quality, i like how the p are well supported and able to hear clearly
- like that can hear the snare in the one part, never heard it before
- very balanced
- love the echoing part in the flutes
- thought some parts could have more dynamic variance but really like the f and ff and how strong the buildup is to them
- like how the ending just tapers off.. you can still hear it, getting softer and softer and softer
- love this performance of the piece as well as the song

Toni

Shenandoah
-strong but quite start
-strong sound from clarinets
-great phrasing
-sound evenly balanced throughout the band
-the notes are "light"
-flutes do a great job
-not the greatest recording
-I think we do a great job on the piece

JordCarMol!!!!!!!

-Better dynamic levels
-faster tempo... alot more interesting
-more energy
-better articulation
-good phrasing

Emmett, Travis, and TJ

Fast, well articulated.
Pushes forward all the time.
Good use of accents to keep it exciting.
TJ says basses in the recording are not as loud as they are in our band.
Travis says basses in recording are louder than they are in our band.
Exciting and spontaneous, but extremely organized at the same time.

Bryn, Allison and Katelynn

-notes and articulations are very together, pushing the tempo
-are able to hear flute accents very well and they should be a lot louder in our performances
-good dynamics, especially when entering first coda on second page
-good articulations by mid-range and bass instruments before going back to the coda
-this piece could have had a bigger ending instead of ending on the same tempo from the start of the coda
-we like how our band gets louder during the second repeat of the coda which they don't really do in this performance
-this interpretation has a great balance and it sounds like their are single players instead of a whole band but it could have varied in dynamics more
-the tempo didn't feel forced, it was very natural and the articulations didn't suffer because of it

Laura, Sarah, Jana

-At the beginning you can hear more high end .
-you can hear more non melody in the first part
-Good accents
-Better balance than us
-very staccato
- Not overwhelming sound.
- Better with dinamics

Jen and Lan

very fast tempo, yet still really articulated, no blending of notes
volume level comes way down at first repeat, we play at almost the same volume level throughout the song
constant tempo throughout
great dynamics, especially beginning

Alec & Kyle

-very articulated
-rubbish quality recording
-keep tempo well
-good balance, can actually hear low brass
-very different dynamics in trombone feature, its pretty cool
-actually heard flute part during trombone feature

Overall well done. Balance was excellent and the dynamic level during the second half (trombone feature) was a nice change and worked rather well. Tempo stayed consistent and made for a good listening experience.

Things we can work on
-more balance...don't play as loud as you can all the time
-maintain a constant tempo...even though the part is hard, try to remain consistent
-maybe try their trombone feature dynamics, it was cool.

Maggie

nice and loud!
the tempo was maintained well

the runs in the piece are quite challenging, but they did a good job of articulating, and staying in time.

I think that it could be faster, just because that is how I roll, and it would be really entertaining!! haha

cheddar is better~

Cooper

jeffy jeff jeff

different notes played then us.

they are definatly more bass heavy
flute parts louder (never heard before)
a bit faster then we play it
vote Jace for PR - the power of christ compels you

 Carrington and Emily

- can hear all parts equally; can hear alot of trumpet flute and trombone
- accents on notes well
- dynamics are done well at repeats

Mas and Akenna

-punchy, VERY

- CRAZY fast

- notes are very seperated

-woodwinds are very articulate

- punchy

-2nd page, a lot quieter

- brass are INCREDIBLE

- punchy

- bouncy

-i like it. we should speed it up.

Great Movies

  • : Michael Clayton (Widescreen)

    Michael Clayton (Widescreen)
Michael Clayton is an intense legal drama that defies a number of conventions of the genre. A pleasant breath of fresh air in terms of Hollywood "drama", this film proves that all you need is a good story, told well, to make a great movie.

  • : Back to the Future: The Complete Trilogy (Widescreen, 3 Discs)

Back to the Future: The Complete Trilogy (Widescreen, 3 Discs)
A guilty pleasure, the Back to the Future trilogy is a standout work in the nostalgic minds of many. That said, there are some interesting cinematic techniques used to combine footage of the original with the sequels and some intelligent storytelling. Highly recommended.

  • : Memento (Widescreen Limited Edition) [2 Discs]

Memento (Widescreen Limited Edition) [2 Discs]
The story of a man with short-term memory loss framed in a groundbreaking narrative shell. Director Chris Nolan tells this story in reverse, beginning with the end and working sequentially backwards towards the beginning of the situation. The direction forces viewers to question what a beginning and an end are, and allows us to feel as our main character does, never knowing what happened just before what is happening in the here and now. Brilliant.
